Clarence Seward Darrow was one of the United States' most famous lawyers in the early 20th century, renowned for his eloquence and rhetorical skill in high‑profile trials. He became a public figure primarily for his central roles in emblematic cases such as the Leopold and Loeb trial (1924), the “Monkey” Trial with John T. Scopes (1925)—in which he confronted William Jennings Bryan—and the defense of Ossian Sweet in a racially charged case (1926).
Beyond courtroom practice, Darrow was active in the civil liberties movement as a prominent member of the American Civil Liberties Union and advocated economic reforms influenced by Georgism. He published memoirs and essays on law, religion, and society, producing works that shaped public debates on criminal justice, inequality, and freedom of expression.
