Claudie Haigneré (born André-Deshays) is a French physician, researcher, former astronaut and public figure, known as the first French woman to travel to space. Trained in sports medicine and biology (1981) and in rheumatology (1984), she completed a doctorate in neuroscience in 1992. Her medical and scientific career led to her selection for spaceflights and to participation in Franco-Russian collaborative projects.
A member of the Soyuz TM-24 crew in 1995, she spent sixteen days aboard the Mir station on the Cassiopeia mission. In October 2001 she returned to space on Soyuz TM-34, becoming the first European woman to visit the International Space Station. She left the European Space Agency in 2002.
Afterwards she entered political life, serving as Minister Delegate for European Affairs in Jean-Pierre Raffarin’s government (2002–2005). She later worked in scientific and cultural institutions, including in a leadership role at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie. Some recent biographical material in sources includes controversial accounts about her personal and professional life, which warrants further verification.
