Cliffie Stone (born Clifford Gilpin Snyder) was a central figure in establishing country music in California after World War II. He worked as a singer, instrumentalist, producer and music publisher, as well as a radio and television personality, maintaining an active career for six decades. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1989. As an executive at Capitol Records from 1946, he served in A&R and discovered or promoted names such as Tennessee Ernie Ford, Molly Bee, Hank Thompson and Stan Freberg. He also founded the publishing company Central Songs and later had a brief spell with the Granite Records label, contributing to the professionalization of the country circuit on the West Coast. On radio and television he hosted influential programs such as Hometown Jamboree, which helped launch the careers of young musicians and provided a showcase for regional artists and repertoire. He recorded several albums with bands in various lineups and had commercial success with the single “The Popcorn Song” (1955). His legacy combines work as a talent developer, musical entrepreneur and organizer of a California country scene that flourished through his roles as producer, host and publisher.
