Clyde Chestnut Barrow was an American criminal who, together with Bonnie Parker and other accomplices, became a central figure of the so‑called “public enemies” era during the Great Depression. From a poor Texas family, he became involved from a young age in theft, car theft and raids on rural establishments, escalating to a violent career marked by robberies, kidnappings and killings. After spells in juvenile detention and the brutal penitentiary system of the early 20th century, Barrow emerged more hardened and directed some of his actions by a desire for revenge against the treatment he had received in prison. He led and took part in raids that attracted intense press coverage, largely because they occurred in small towns and at gas stations, although some of the actions were bank robberies. Known for using heavy weaponry, including the Browning BAR machine gun, Barrow and the gang are blamed for multiple deaths of police officers and civilians between 1932 and 1934. His story ended in 1934, when he and Bonnie Parker were ambushed and killed by a group of law enforcement officers, an episode that cemented his place in public memory and popular culture.
