Luís António Jaime de Bourbon e Farnésio, known as the Count of Chinchón, was an infante of Spain and one of the younger sons of Philip V and Isabel Farnese. Originally destined for a clerical career because of his place in the succession, he was given the archbishoprics of Toledo (1735) and Seville (1741) at an early age and was made a cardinal, but he never showed a true religious vocation. In 1754 he left the clerical state by his own decision, seeking greater personal peace. In 1761 he acquired the title Count of Chinchón and devoted himself mainly to secular life. He was a notable patron of the arts, supporting figures such as Francisco de Goya, Luís Paret and the composer Luigi Boccherini, which secured him a significant role in the Spanish cultural scene of the eighteenth century. He entered a morganatic marriage in 1776 with María Teresa de Vallabriga, a union that distanced him from the court and included provisions preventing his children from receiving royal honours. He had three children, among them Luís María, who would become a cardinal and serve as regent during a critical moment in the early nineteenth century. He died in 1785, leaving a legacy chiefly as an artistic patron and as a controversial figure because of his move from clerical life to the private sphere.
