Joseph Patrick Kennedy Jr. was a United States naval aviator and the eldest son of the well‑known Kennedy family. A Harvard graduate, he left law school to enlist in the Naval Reserve in 1941, becoming first a patrol pilot and then a bomber pilot, serving on anti‑submarine missions and on operations over Europe during World War II. Promoted to lieutenant in July 1944, Kennedy had completed dozens of missions and was eligible to return to civilian life when he volunteered to fly in Operation Aphrodite, an experimental project that converted bombers into remotely guided “flying bombs.” In August 1944, during the Navy’s first mission of that operation, the aircraft he was piloting exploded and he was killed in action; he was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross. Groomed from youth by his father for a national political career, Kennedy served as a delegate to the 1940 Democratic National Convention and had planned to run for the House of Representatives. His death altered the family’s political succession plans, redirecting presidential ambitions toward his brother John F. Kennedy. Controversial remarks he made in his youth about European regimes have become part of his biographical record, but sources indicate his views changed before the United States entered the war.
