Philip, Count of Flanders, was a Belgian prince and member of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha who lived in the 19th century. The son of King Leopold I and the brother of Leopold II and Empress Charlotte of Mexico, he devoted himself mainly to representational and diplomatic duties, making several courtesy visits to Europe's principal courts and acting as an informal interlocutor for Belgian interests with neighboring powers. Suffering from early-onset deafness, he declined offers of foreign crowns and proposed dynastic marriages, and during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 he acted in ways intended to preserve Belgium’s neutrality and territorial integrity. His marriage to Princess Marie Louise of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen strengthened ties with the German royal family, an important factor in the delicate balance between France and Germany. Known for his aesthetic tastes, cultural affiliations and passion for libraries and hunting, he left the impression of a cultivated and wealthy prince. He was also the father of King Albert I, becoming a direct ancestor of the current Belgian and Luxembourg monarchs and of several European dynastic branches.
