Carlos María Isidro de Borbón, Count of Molina, was a central figure in the Carlist Wars when he became the first Carlist claimant to the Spanish throne under the name Carlos V. A son of Charles IV, he emerged as the leader of absolutist and clerical factions that rejected the Pragmatic Sanction of 1830, which had favored the succession of the infant Isabella. His dynastic claim, backed by traditionalist forces, gave rise to the First Carlist War (1833–1840).

During the conflict, Carlos alternated political presence with life in the countryside alongside his armies in the Pyrenees, taking part in campaigns such as the Royal Expedition of 1837. Although he had capable commanders—most notably Tomás de Zumalacárregui and later Rafael Maroto—criticisms of his political ineptitude and tensions between the military staff and the clergy limited the Carlist advance.

Politically defeated by the Convention of Vergara (1839) and constrained by unfolding events, he progressively withdrew from the spotlight, abdicated in 1845, and assumed the title Count of Molina, leaving a lasting mark on Spanish history as a symbol of monarchical traditionalism and resistance to centralizing liberalism.
