Conrad Potter Aiken was an American writer and poet whose work encompassed poetry, short stories, novels, literary criticism, drama, and autobiography. Known for his exploration of psychological themes and the influence of symbolism, Aiken received major honors including the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (1930) and the National Book Award, and served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 1950 to 1952. His output includes notable collections such as Earth Triumphant (1914), The Charnel Rose (1918), and And In the Hanging Gardens (1933), and the widely anthologized short story “Silent Snow, Secret Snow.”
Personal experience and his study of theorists such as Freud and Jung deeply shaped his work, giving his poems and narratives strong psychological depth. A Harvard graduate, he associated and collaborated with figures like T. S. Eliot and drew on diverse influences ranging from symbolism to the expansive tradition of Walt Whitman. Over his life he wrote or edited more than fifty books and acted as a mentor to contemporary authors such as Malcolm Lowry.
He lived in both the United States and England and, despite extended periods abroad, professed a strong identification with the New England literary tradition. His legacy endures in American modern poetry, both for its formal quality and for its engagement with psychology and the symbolic tradition.
