Conrad Ferdinand Meyer was a Swiss writer best known for his historical narratives and a late, intense body of poetry. A master of literary realism, he became noted for historical novellas set mainly in the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Counter‑Reformation, and for narrative ballads that center on moral crises and tragically fulfilled destinies. His work examines the conflict between freedom and fate, often culminating in catastrophes that expose the protagonists’ contradictions. Originally trained in law, Meyer deepened his study of history and the humanities during extended stays in France and Italy; decisive influences included the historians Louis Vulliemin and Jacob Burckhardt. From 1870 he made a decisive turn to writing in German and his output grew more productive, with notable titles such as Jürg Jenatsch (1876), Das Amulett (1873) and Die Versuchung des Pescara (1887). Recognized in his lifetime — he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1880 — Meyer left a legacy as a fiction writer who combined historical rigor, cultural research and psychological insight. His collections and studies of art and culture, as well as his narratives set in pivotal episodes of European history, keep him relevant to German‑language literature.
