Ernst August, Crown Prince of Hanover, was a central figure of a German dynasty that lost power in the nineteenth century. The eldest son of George V of Hanover, he inherited ducal and princely titles and remained a claimant to the throne after Hanover’s annexation by Prussia in 1866, spending long periods in exile in Vienna and Paris. He refused to renounce his dynastic rights, financing and supporting traditionalist initiatives such as the Guelph Legion, which symbolized the House of Guelph’s resistance.
He married Princess Thyra of Denmark in 1878, a union that reinforced ties with other European royal houses. Although honored by Queen Victoria with orders and commissions in the British Army, his British honours were revoked after the First World War because of his alignment with the German powers. In 1913 he formally renounced his succession rights in favour of his son, who would later become Duke of Brunswick.
Ernst August’s life reflects the decline of regional monarchies in Europe and the complex dynastic networks that linked the British and continental courts. He died in 1923, leaving a legacy marked by legitimist persistence and by the political consequences of the era’s European unifications and conflicts.
