Duque de Orléans Philippe I

Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, was a member of the French royal family and the younger brother of Louis XIV, known at court by the honorific “Monsieur.” A distinguished military commander, he served notably in the campaigns of the War of Devolution and the Franco–Dutch War, achieving a notable victory at the Battle of Cassel. His military role reinforced his standing as an important figure in the political and military affairs of Louis XIV’s reign. As a skilled administrator, Philippe substantially increased the fortune of the House of Orléans, transforming it into a powerful branch of the Bourbon dynasty and founding the line that later produced King Louis-Philippe I. Also known for his taste for elegance, he influenced court fashion by popularizing the use of wigs and cravats at Versailles. A controversial figure because of his private life, he married twice for dynastic reasons—first to Henrietta Anne of England and then to Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palatinate—while maintaining known male relationships at court. His legacy lies both in the political and financial importance of the House of Orléans and in the extensive descendants who joined later Catholic European royalty.
