Alexander Karađorđević, born in London in 1945, is head of the defunct House of Karađorđević and claimant to the former thrones of Yugoslavia and Serbia, retaining the ceremonial title of Crown Prince. The only son of King Peter II of Yugoslavia and Princess Alexandra of Greece, he symbolizes the dynastic continuity of a monarchy abolished in 1945. Raised in exile and educated at Swiss and British institutions, Alexander’s childhood was marked by family hardships and a formation oriented toward public and diplomatic roles. He married Princess Maria da Glória of Brazil in 1972; they had three children and divorced in 1985. Over recent decades he has taken part in public missions and engagements that earned him support from monarchist circles in Serbia, as well as closer ties with religious institutions and political currents favoring restoration. After Montenegro’s 2006 referendum he became more prominent by offering contributions to Serbia’s political development. His notability stems both from his ancestry and European connections and from his public role as a representative of a monarchical tradition, remembered chiefly for his ceremonial duties and for keeping alive debate about the royal legacy in the region.
