Alexei Petrovich Romanov was the tsarevich and heir apparent of Peter I, and a central figure in the tensions between the old Russian court and the Westernizing reforms promoted by his father. Raised amid conflict between Peter and his first wife, Eudoxia Lopukhina, he initially received a traditional education and later was taught by foreign tutors, with emphasis on history, geography and French. In 1711 he married Charlotte Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel; the marriage produced two children, Peter (the future Peter II) and Natalia, both of whom died in youth, a circumstance that further weakened his position in the succession. Throughout his life he resisted the rapid changes imposed by Peter I and was accused of conspiring against the tsar. Convicted of involvement in an alleged rebellion, he died in 1718 after a trial that reflected the tense political climate of Peter’s reign, leaving a legacy marked by family tragedy and dynastic conflict during Russia’s great transformation.
