Dan Brown is an American author known for commercially successful thrillers that blend cryptography, art, science, and conspiracy. He rose to international prominence with The Da Vinci Code, which became a global bestseller and sparked widespread public debate; his novels have been published in dozens of languages and sold hundreds of millions of copies. His debut novel was Digital Fortress (1998), followed by Deception Point and Angels & Demons, the latter introducing the symbologist Robert Langdon, the protagonist of several novels centered on intense searches typically confined to a short span of time. Three titles — Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code, and Inferno — were adapted for film. A graduate of Amherst with studies in art history in Spain, Brown incorporated personal interests such as codes, treasure hunts, and references to historical works and figures into his fiction, in part inspired by his family upbringing. Named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people, his legacy is defined both by commercial success and by controversies arising from the historical and religious readings of his novels.
