Dan Shechtman is an Israeli physical chemist known for discovering quasicrystals, a new class of materials that are ordered but non-periodic and that changed fundamental concepts in crystallography. In 1982, while on sabbatical at U.S. institutions, he identified the icosahedral phase that opened the field of quasiperiodic crystals; his observation, published in 1984, provoked intense academic controversy before being widely confirmed. For the impact of this discovery he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011.
Over his career Shechtman held academic positions at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and at American universities, continuing research on advanced materials, microstructure and the properties of alloys and CVD diamonds. His work showed that quasicrystals have low thermal and electrical conductivity and high structural stability, traits that have attracted interest for potential technological applications.
In addition to his scientific work, he served on academic bodies and received international honors and awards. Shechtman’s career is often cited as an example of intellectual perseverance in the face of scientific skepticism, and his legacy remains tied to the redefinition of atomic order in matter.
