Daniel Pearl was an American journalist for The Wall Street Journal whose international career led him to cover conflicts and investigate terrorist networks in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A communications graduate from Stanford, he worked at several of the paper’s bureaus — Atlanta, Washington, London, Paris — before taking the regional chief post for South Asia based in Mumbai. His reporting ranged from culture and economics to investigations of ethnic wars in the Balkans and controversial military attacks.
In 2002, while investigating alleged links between militants and training camps in Pakistan, Pearl was kidnapped in Karachi by a group of jihadist militants. The case drew international attention for the violence of the crime, the kidnappers’ demands, and the video released by his captors; his body was found months later.
The episode sparked debates about reporters’ safety in conflict zones and about the transnational reach of terrorist networks after September 11. Pearl left behind his wife, Mariane van Neyenhoff, and a posthumous son; his death remains a tragic milestone in the journalistic memory of the risks of international investigative reporting.
