Daniel Pennac, the pen name of Daniel Pennacchioni, is a French writer whose work ranges from fiction to essays and theater, with a strong presence in screenwriting and comics as well. A former literature teacher, he rose to international prominence with the series centered on Benjamin Malaussène, which began in 1985 with The Scapegoat (O Paraíso dos Ogros), and consolidated his literary standing by winning the Prix Renaudot in 2007 for Chagrin d'école, an autobiographical novel about school difficulties and a passion for reading. Pennac’s writing blends humor, imagination and social commitment: works such as La Débauche (with Jacques Tardi) underline his critique of institutions and precariousness, while Like a Novel (Como um Romance) sets out an affective pedagogy focused on the “Inalienable Rights of the Reader.” He also addressed contemporary themes in Journal d’un corps and adapted and performed texts on stage, showing a performative relationship with the spoken word. A proponent of reading aloud, he has recorded several works in audio and taken part in charitable initiatives for readers with visual impairments. His work has left an imprint on both youth literature and the French literary detective novel, influencing readers and educators through his advocacy for the pleasure of reading.
