David Brower was a prominent American environmental activist and conservationist who helped turn nature protection into a national political force. As the first executive director of the Sierra Club (1952–1969), he grew the organization from about 7,000 to 70,000 members and led influential campaigns against large projects that threatened natural areas, most notably the proposed dam at Echo Park and schemes that would have flooded sections of the Grand Canyon.
A diligent editor and publisher, Brower used large-format books and photography to raise public awareness of nature conservation; those publications boosted the organization’s growth and helped shape the environmental discourse of the time. His efforts were decisive in mobilizing support for the Wilderness Act of 1964 and in national publicity campaigns that drew new adherents to the movement.
Before dedicating himself full time to conservation, Brower was an accomplished mountaineer—with dozens of first ascents—and served in the 10th Mountain Division during World War II, training soldiers in mountaineering and skiing. Over his life he founded and helped establish several environmental organizations, leaving a legacy of institutional activism and communication strategies that influenced subsequent generations.
