David Hoyt Canary was an American actor whose work in theatre, film, and television made him a recognizable figure in 20th-century entertainment. Trained in music, he appeared in major Broadway productions and classic musicals, alternating dramatic and vocal roles that showcased his versatility as a baritone. In film and on television he was notable in westerns and dramas, appearing in films such as Hombre and in series like Bonanza, where he played ranch foreman Candy Canaday and gained international recognition.
From the 1980s onward, Canary achieved wide popular fame for his portrayal of Adam Chandler on the soap opera All My Children, a role that earned him multiple Daytime Emmy nominations and five wins in the Outstanding Lead Actor category. On the same series he also portrayed Adam’s twin brother Stuart, demonstrating skill in dual-role scenes. Beyond daytime drama, he compiled an extensive list of guest appearances on series including Gunsmoke and Law & Order.
Known for his friendliness with fans, he took part in events and fan gatherings and maintained ties to locations associated with the work that made him famous. His legacy is marked both by a strong presence in television drama and by classical training in musical theatre.
