David Friedrich Strauss was a liberal Protestant theologian, writer, and German biographer whose work reshaped the historical study of Jesus and early Christianity. He became known for Das Leben Jesu kritisch bearbeitet (The Life of Jesus, Critically Examined), in which he argued that many Gospel episodes are myths—understood as imaginative expressions of religious truths—and rejected traditional supernatural explanations for miracles. That approach placed him at the center of intense academic and public debate. Initially connected with the academic milieu of Tübingen and influenced by contemporary philosophical currents, Strauss applied textual criticism and historical methods to the Christian tradition, foreshadowing changes in biblical scholarship. The reception of his work was marked by attacks from Hegelian colleagues and public controversies that at times provoked protests and led to his forced retirement from certain formal positions. Beyond his theological output, Strauss devoted himself to literary biography and to political and cultural essays, maintaining a continuous presence in nineteenth-century German intellectual life. His legacy lies in institutionalizing a critical, historical reading of the New Testament and in the influence he exerted on the study of modern religion.
