David Hume was a Scottish philosopher, historian, and essayist whose work represents the high point of the Scottish Enlightenment and British empiricism. His critical examination of Cartesianism and theological metaphysics established a philosophical program that applies an experimental method to mental phenomena, shaped by his reading of Newton, the classics, and contemporary thinkers. Author of A Treatise of Human Nature, the central work that attempted to found a science of human nature, Hume developed a radical empiricism and methodological skepticism that challenged traditional views of causation, perception, and morality. Although the Treatise received little attention at the time of its publication, it became a fundamental reference for subsequent generations. His influence extends to Kant, analytic philosophy, and naturalist currents; during the twentieth century critics and interpreters reassessed his project, revealing constructive aspects beyond skepticism. Hume also published historical and political essays and followed contemporary events closely—such as American independence—taking public positions aligned with liberal principles. Hume’s legacy remains central to modern philosophy: his inquiries into human nature, knowledge, and morality continue to shape debates on empiricism, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind.
