David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary, physician and explorer whose work in the 19th century substantially expanded European knowledge of the African interior. Initially sent as a missionary, he trained in medicine and theology and ultimately devoted his life to expeditions that combined religious, humanitarian and scientific aims. He traveled tens of thousands of kilometers through then little-known regions, treating the sick in villages and establishing contact with many African communities. His journeys produced important geographic discoveries, including the European identification of Victoria Falls and extensive crossings of the Kalahari, the Zambezi River and Lake Tanganyika. He published travel accounts that became best-sellers, which increased his influence among the public and institutions such as the Royal Geographical Society, which supported subsequent expeditions in search of the Nile’s sources. Livingstone was also known for his opposition to the slave trade and for promoting the idea of “legitimate commerce” and Christianity as agents of change in the African interior. His long career of exploration and his writings left a lasting impact on geography and on nineteenth-century colonial narratives, although his actions must be understood within the complex context of the colonial relationships of the period.
