David Sarnoff was a businessman and telecommunications pioneer whose work shaped radio and television in the United States throughout the twentieth century. An immigrant from Belarus, he began his career as a telegraph operator and came to prominence when he coordinated communications during the sinking of the Titanic, relaying information by Morse code for many hours. He was a central figure in the commercial development of radio, promoting network broadcasting and helping popularize the household receiver. At RCA, the company he helped consolidate, Sarnoff led the creation of the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and directed investments in research and technological development, including supporting Vladimir Zworykin’s work toward electronic television. In 1939 he took part in the television debut at the New York World’s Fair, marking the start of regular programming and the expansion of NBC as the first television network in the U.S. During World War II he served as a communications advisor to the Allies. His career, which began in the early twentieth century and spanned more than five decades leading RCA until 1970, left institutional and technological legacies in broadcasting and commercial television.
