Denny Galehouse was a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from 1934 to 1949 for the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns and Boston Red Sox. Discovered in the minor leagues while still young, he established himself as a regular starter from 1936 and had his best years in the 1940s, when he repeatedly posted seasons of 11–12 wins. During World War II he served in the United States Navy and joined the baseball team at the Great Lakes naval station, returning to professional baseball in 1946. In 1947 he led the American League in the fewest walks per nine innings (2.482) and was among the leaders in complete games and shutouts that season. Over 15 major-league seasons he compiled a 109–118 record, 100 complete games, 17 shutouts, 13 saves and 851 strikeouts, with a 3.97 ERA. He was the starting pitcher in the decisive American League playoff game on October 4, 1948, when the Red Sox lost to Cleveland. After retiring as a player he remained in the game as a scout for several franchises, including the Red Sox, Indians, Tigers, Cardinals and Padres, leaving a legacy as a long‑standing figure in American baseball.
