Derek Alton Walcott was a poet and playwright from Saint Lucia whose work examined the cultural and historical complexity of the Caribbean under colonialism. Acknowledged internationally, he received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature, which praised his poetry as luminous and sustained by historical perspective and multicultural commitment. His output includes the epic Omeros (1990), often cited as his major achievement, alongside collections and plays that address identity, memory, and colonial legacy.

Trained in literature and also a qualified painter, Walcott worked as a critic, teacher, and founder of the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, making a significant contribution to Caribbean theatre. In 1971 his play Dream on Monkey Mountain won an Obie Award and cemented his reputation as a dramatist. He taught for decades at Boston University, where he founded the Boston Playwrights' Theatre, influencing generations of playwrights and poets.

Over his career he received numerous literary honors—including international awards and lifetime recognition—and maintained an artistic practice combining poetry, theatre, and painting. His legacy remains central to Caribbean literature and to discussions of post-colonial identity, influencing writers and cultural institutions worldwide.
