Deval Laurdine Patrick is an American lawyer and politician, best known for serving as the 71st governor of Massachusetts from 2007 to 2015. He was the state’s first African American governor and the first Democrat to hold the office since 1991. Before his statewide executive career, he served as Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice under Bill Clinton (1994–1997), leading investigations into racial profiling, police misconduct and a major inquiry into church burnings in the South.
A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, Patrick began his career at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and later became a partner at Boston law firms. He also worked as an executive and general counsel at large corporations, including Texaco and The Coca‑Cola Company, where he led initiatives on labor practices and corporate governance.
As governor, he oversaw implementation of the state’s health care reform program, increased investments in education and the life sciences, reorganized public transit management by creating the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, and adopted environmental targets by joining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. After leaving office, he worked in the private sector and on entrepreneurship and exchange initiatives, and mounted a brief presidential campaign in 2020.
