Dick Haymes was a ballad singer born in Argentina who rose to prominence in the adult pop era and was compared in stature to figures such as Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. He became known in the 1940s for singing with major orchestras — including those led by Harry James, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey — and for hits such as “You’ll Never Know,” “It Can’t Be Wrong,” “Till the End of Time” and the award-winning “It Might as Well Be Spring” from the film State Fair (1945).
In addition to his recording career, Haymes appeared in films and on radio, hosting programs and taking part in several movies throughout the 1940s. His repertoire and vocal style made him a notable presence on the period’s charts, even if he did not remain at the very top for his entire career.
From the 1950s onward he faced personal and professional difficulties — including alcoholism, tax troubles and immigration issues — that reduced his visibility. Still, he managed a partial comeback with recordings for Capitol and continued to perform and record into the 1970s.
His legacy is that of an exemplary interpreter in the mid‑century American ballad tradition, whose recordings remain reference points for the popular repertoire of that era.
