Rosemary Kennedy was a member of the Kennedy family, daughter of Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and sister of John F., Robert F., and Ted Kennedy. From childhood she showed developmental delays and learning difficulties, which her family tried to address with tutoring and education in specialized institutions. In her youth she took part in social events and accompanied the family on official trips, but as she moved into adulthood she began to have behavioral crises and seizures. In 1941, at age 23, she underwent a cerebral lobotomy approved by her father; the procedure caused permanent damage, reducing her cognitive and speech abilities. After the procedure, Rosemary lived in psychiatric institutions and, from 1949, resided at St. Coletta in Jefferson, Wisconsin, where she spent most of her life. Her condition and whereabouts were kept private for decades, making her case a sensitive episode in the family’s history and in the history of psychiatric medicine.
