Herbert Gustave “Dick” Plasman was a professional American football player who played as a running back for eight seasons with the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cardinals. Selected in the third round of the 1937 draft, he was known for a physical style of play: praised for forceful blocking, skill as a pass rusher, and receiving ability—qualities that prompted some to argue he deserved a place in the Hall of Fame. His career was marked by dramatic and symbolic episodes. On November 6, 1938, he crashed into the brick wall at Wrigley Field and suffered multiple fractures and a severe scalp laceration; despite the injuries, he returned to play. Plasman is also remembered as the last player in the league to play without a helmet, including in championship games won by the Bears in 1940 and 1941. During World War II, he joined the Air Force in July 1942 and missed the 1942 and 1943 seasons, returning in 1944 when the NFL began requiring helmets—bringing an end to his helmetless play. His legacy combines competitive performance with a symbolic role in the sport’s move toward greater safety.
