Dietrich Eckart was a German writer, playwright and political activist who became a central figure in the origins of the Nazi movement. From the Bavarian cultural scene, he became known for his literary output and for a vehemently antisemitic rhetoric that defined his public and intellectual activity. In the years immediately after World War I, Eckart drew close to nationalist leaders and was one of Adolf Hitler’s interlocutors and mentors, exerting personal and ideological influence over him between 1919 and 1923. He took an active part in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch and was imprisoned in Landsberg, later released for health reasons. He published essays and political writings that helped spread concepts and symbols later adopted by Nazism, including an early use of the term “Third Reich.” After his death in 1923, his image and work were celebrated by supporters, who credited him as a “spiritual father” of the movement. His legacy is linked to the intellectual impetus and ideological legitimacy that contributed to the radicalization of German nationalism.
