Dig Richards — full name Digby George Richards — was one of the pioneers of Australian rock and roll in the 1950s and 1960s. He rose to prominence as the lead singer of the R'Jays, with whom he made regular appearances on contemporary television programs and recorded the first 12" LP by an Australian rock artist, released in 1959. His early career was marked by charting singles on local charts and by supporting tours for international artists.
Throughout the 1960s Richards established himself as a solo artist, expanding his skills as an instrumentalist and songwriter. In the 1970s he redirected his career toward country music, achieving several national hits as reported on the Kent Music Report, including tracks such as "A Little Piece of Peace" and "People Call Me Country".
In addition to his recording work, Richards performed in musical theatre and worked as a television presenter, helping to spread rock and popular music in Australia. He died in 1983, leaving a legacy as a performer who helped establish the local rock scene and later successfully transitioned into country repertoire.
