Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was a Russian chemist and physicist whose principal contribution was the creation of the first version of the periodic table of the elements. By arranging known elements according to their atomic masses and properties, Mendeleev revealed regularities that allowed him to predict the existence and properties of then‑unknown elements, establishing him as a central figure in the systematization of modern chemistry. Educated and active within the 19th‑century European scientific milieu, Mendeleev studied with noted experimentalists and carried out experimental work on solutions, gases, and physical properties, in addition to publishing an extensive scientific corpus. His table laid the foundations for chemical classification as used today and exemplified a major theoretical insight combined with empirical method. Beyond the periodic table, Mendeleev engaged in the scientific debates of his time—including hypotheses about the inorganic origin of petroleum—and maintained an active academic and research career throughout his life. His scientific legacy has been honored posthumously in various ways, including the naming of element 101, mendelevium.
