Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter whose career had a profound impact on folk, bluegrass, country, blues, and gospel music. Blind since childhood, he became known for his technical skill in both fingerpicking and flatpicking and for the extensive repertoire of traditional songs he preserved from the oral traditions of his native North Carolina mountains. A multiple Grammy winner, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, Watson rose to prominence during the 1960s folk revival with performances at festivals such as Newport and definitive recordings that established him as a model for instrumentalists. His long partnership with his son Merle Watson created an influential duo until Merle’s death in 1985; the family legacy is also honored by the MerleFest festival. A pioneer in adapting fiddle techniques to the guitar and in the use of crosspicking, he influenced generations of guitarists, including Clarence White and Tony Rice. In addition to his distinctive baritone voice, he was known for playing classic acoustic guitar models—among them Martins and instruments custom-built by Gallagher—and for his enduring commitment to American traditional music.
