Dörte Helm (Dorothea Margarethe Amalie Helm) was a German artist associated with the Bauhaus whose work encompassed painting, graphic design, interior design and writing. Trained at several art schools in Germany, she enrolled at the Staatliches Bauhaus Weimar in 1919, where she studied with masters such as Lyonel Feininger and Johannes Itten and contributed to the student magazine Der Austausch. At the school she was notable both for artistic contributions — posters, tapestries, typographic work and murals — and for advocating equal rights and better conditions for female students.

In the 1920s Helm collaborated on Walter Gropius’s architectural projects, working on interior design and color schemes, and also produced stained glass, tapestries and decorative panels shown in regional exhibitions. She worked as an independent decorator, participated in artists’ associations in Rostock, and exhibited in museums and youth art shows in Berlin.

Her career illustrates the advances and limits faced by women in the arts in the early twentieth century: valued for her creative contributions, she also experienced the erasure of recognition that affected many of her peers. Helm’s life and work have recently been revisited in cultural projects aiming to recover these women’s narratives in the history of the Bauhaus.
