Don Doll was an American football player and coach best known as a defensive back in the 1940s and 1950s. A product of the University of Southern California, he excelled as a halfback, return specialist and punter, helped power the Trojans’ successful campaigns and served in the Navy during World War II. In the professional ranks he played mainly for the Detroit Lions (1949–1953), with stints in Washington and Los Angeles, was selected to four Pro Bowls and was named MVP of the 1952 Pro Bowl.
As a player he was renowned for producing turnovers: he tied the record with four interceptions in a single game and is the only player in league history to record 10 or more interceptions in three separate seasons. At his retirement he ranked second on the all‑time interceptions list, leaving a statistical legacy that includes rookie interception return records.
After concluding his playing career he spent 34 years coaching, holding posts at universities and with NFL franchises and working under figures such as Vince Lombardi and Don Shula. His career shows both individual excellence in defensive play and a long, influential role in shaping and supporting teams across decades.
