Don Drysdale was an American professional pitcher who spent his entire 14-season career with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. Known for his combative personality and inside pitching, he emerged as one of the most dominant hurlers of his era, winning the Cy Young Award in 1962 and playing a key role in three World Series titles won by the Dodgers. At his peak, Drysdale amassed notable achievements: he led the major leagues in strikeouts, recorded six consecutive shutouts and pitched 58⅔ consecutive scoreless innings in 1968 — a streak that stood as a benchmark until Orel Hershiser's later run. He was also a nine-time All-Star, starting the game five times, and finished his career with 209 wins, 2,486 strikeouts and a 2.95 ERA. After retiring due to shoulder injuries in 1969, Drysdale worked as a radio and television commentator. His contributions to baseball were recognized with election to the Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Dodgers’ retirement of his number 53, cementing the legacy of one of the club’s most influential pitchers during the move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.
