Don Leslie Lind was an American physicist and astronaut whose career combined scientific research and spaceflight. Trained in physics with a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, he served as an officer in the Naval Reserve and accumulated extensive flight experience before joining NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where he specialized in the study of plasma and low-energy particles in the Earth’s magnetosphere and interplanetary space. Selected with the fifth group of astronauts in 1966, Lind served mainly in scientific roles, contributing to the development of tools and procedures for lunar missions and acting as a support crew member on Skylab flights. He was assigned to contingency operations for potential orbital rescues, demonstrating technical preparedness and versatility. After a long wait—the longest between selection and flight among agency astronauts—he made his orbital flight on Challenger’s STS-51-B mission in 1985, conducting experiments aboard the Spacelab that included the first 3-D video images of the aurora borealis. After leaving NASA, he turned to academia as a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Utah, contributing to space research and the training of new generations.
