Don McLean is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist whose career was established in the folk-rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s. He became known for the narrative, nostalgic tone of his songs and for blending influences from traditional folk, easy listening and country music. His international breakthrough came with the album and title single American Pie (1971). The more-than-eight-minute title track became a cultural landmark by evoking the loss of rock icons and reflecting on shifts in youth culture; it reached the top of the charts and remains his biggest commercial hit. Other notable songs in his catalog include Vincent, And I Love You So and Castles in the Air, which expanded his reach through recordings by artists such as Perry Como and Elvis Presley. Over his career McLean appeared at festivals and historic folk venues, worked with figures such as Pete Seeger and received industry recognition — including induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004 and performance certifications for American Pie and Vincent.
