Donald D. Clayton was an American astrophysicist recognized for transforming the understanding of supernovae and stellar nucleosynthesis. His prediction that supernova explosions would be intensely radioactive opened the way for gamma‑ray line astronomy and established the observational importance of these events. For this contribution he received the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 1992, and one of his papers was selected by the American Astronomical Society among the fifty most influential of the twentieth century. Clayton developed pioneering models of the s‑process and r‑process and described the equilibrium of radioactive abundances during silicon burning, explaining the origin of heavy elements and the gamma‑ray emissions from gas ejected by supernovae. He was also a key figure in mobilizing scientific support for the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, helping advance gamma‑ray astronomy. In addition to his technical work, he published popular science and memoirs, including a handbook on the origin of isotopes in the cosmos. He worked at academic institutions such as Caltech, Rice, and Clemson, trained generations of researchers, and left a lasting legacy in the theory of element formation and in linking nucleosynthesis to astrophysical observation.
