Dora Benjamin was a German economist, educational psychologist, and social activist known for her work defending children and working women. Earning a doctorate in economics in 1924, she studied the conditions of garment workers in Berlin and advocated regulations that would shift part of domestic labor to factories and provide day-care centers and kindergartens as public policies to support motherhood and women’s employment. During the Weimar Republic she published studies and essays on homework, women’s labor, and the social effects of female employment, and she also collaborated on public health initiatives and efforts to combat child labor. After the Nazis came to power in 1933 she was forced into exile; in France and later in Switzerland she continued researching the traumatic effects of persecution on refugee children and took part in educational reform projects. As a representative of aid organizations for workers and refugees, she spoke on the importance of reintegration and migration policies in postwar European reconstruction. Her legacy includes pioneering studies on childhood in contexts of work and persecution; since 2009 a park in Berlin has borne her name.
