Dora Gerson was a German actress and singer of Jewish origin, active mainly in the 1920s. She began her career with touring companies, also appearing in successful silent films of the period, including adaptations of works by Karl May, and performing in Berlin cabarets. Her artistic work was notable both for her acting and for her recordings in Yiddish and German. With the rise of Nazism, Gerson’s career faced severe repression: banned from official productions, she began recording for small Jewish labels. In 1936 she released notable songs such as “Der Rebe Hot Geheysn Freylekh Zayn,” as well as recordings that recalled pre-Nazi Germany and found an audience in Jewish communities across Europe. Having taken refuge in the Netherlands from 1936, she tried to flee persecution with her family after the German occupation but was arrested and deported. Dora Gerson, her husband Max Sluizer, and their two children were murdered at Auschwitz on 14 February 1943. Her legacy remains tied to the cultural memory of Berlin cabaret and German silent cinema, and to the voices silenced by the Holocaust.
