Dorian Leigh was an American model considered one of the first “supermodels” in fashion history, with a strong presence in the editorial market during the 1940s and 1950s. Her image—characterized by facial features that matched the era’s aesthetic ideals—earned her dozens of covers for publications such as Vogue, Life, Look and McCall’s, as well as high‑profile advertising campaigns.
She became known as the face of influential brands, notably in iconic Revlon campaigns such as Poison Apple (1945) and especially Fire and Ice (1952), photographed by Richard Avedon. Those campaigns helped visually define postwar notions of feminine glamour and sophistication and cemented her international notoriety.
Beyond modeling, Dorian pursued a varied professional life: she worked in aeronautical design and advertising, performed on Broadway and in French films, and helped professionalize the European modeling market alongside Eileen Ford. She also ventured into gastronomy, studying at Le Cordon Bleu and opening a restaurant in Paris.
Her public life included relationships with well‑known figures and an influence on the career of her sister Suzy Parker. Her 1980 autobiography recorded her memories of career and life, leaving a legacy regarding twentieth‑century fashion standards and the industry.
