Doris Day was a prominent American actress and singer whose public career ranged from the big-band era of the 1940s to television programs in later decades. Initially known for her recording of "Sentimental Journey" (1945) and her collaborations with Les Brown, she became one of the most popular voices of the twentieth century, recording more than 650 songs between 1947 and 1967. In film, she achieved immediate success with Romance on the High Seas (1948) and established her screen image in high‑grossing romantic comedies and musicals.
She played leading roles in notable productions such as Pillow Talk (1953) and starred opposite James Stewart in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). In the 1950s and 1960s her comedies Midnight Lace (1959) and That Touch of Mink (1963) were particularly associated with her public persona. Between 1968 and 1973 she starred in The Doris Day Show, expanding her presence on television.
Honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Cecil B. DeMille Award (1989), Day also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004. In the final decades of her life she focused on animal welfare through the Doris Day Pet Foundation, a cause she maintained until her death in 2019.
