Australian poet and writer Dorothea Mackellar is best remembered for the poem "My Country," whose second stanza—beginning with "I love a sunburnt country"—has become part of Australia’s literary iconography. Born into a wealthy, well-educated family, she divided her time between residences in Sydney and a retreat in Pittwater; her experiences on her brothers’ farms in northwest New South Wales inspired the rural and landscape tone of her verse, often classified as bush poetry.
She published four major volumes of poetry between 1911 and 1926, as well as novels and collaborations with her friend Ruth Bedford. She wrote and published intensively until the mid-1920s and remained an active figure in Sydney’s literary circles in subsequent decades, joining editors’ and authors’ clubs and the local office of PEN.
Recognized both during her life and posthumously, she has a federal electorate and several streets named in her honor, and is commemorated by initiatives such as the poetry prize that bears her name. In 1968 she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her contribution to Australian literature. Her legacy remains tied to the poetic image of the Australian landscape and the shaping of a national literary identity.
