Dorothy Stratten, born Dorothy Ruth Hoogstraten, was a Canadian model who rose to prominence when she became Playmate of the Year in 1980. Hailed as a promising discovery by the magazine that introduced her, she received direct support from Hugh Hefner and began transitioning into acting, taking roles in TV series and films and attracting invitations and screen tests that suggested potential for a more substantial film career. Her name drew public attention not only for her modeling work but for her connections with filmmakers of the so‑called New Hollywood; Peter Bogdanovich invited her to join the cast of They All Laughed, a project that opened doors in the film industry and prompted occasional favorable notice of her screen charisma.
