Dottie Wiltse Collins was a prominent American pitcher in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL), playing from 1944 to 1948 and in 1950. Discovered by Bill Allington, she debuted with the Minneapolis Millerettes and established herself with the Fort Wayne Daisies, where she earned the nickname “Strikeout Queen” by leading the league in strikeouts, win percentage, and defensive efficiency. Known for a powerful curveball even while adapting her delivery (from underhand to overhand), Collins set several league records and produced memorable performances, including seasons with more than 200 strikeouts. Her early career also included notable episodes such as long outings and the difficult experience of playing for a traveling team like the Minneapolis “Orphans.” After retiring from play, Collins helped preserve the history of the AAGPBL by assisting in the founding of the players’ association in 1987, serving in various roles and keeping alive the memory of women in baseball during and after World War II. Her legacy remains tied to pioneering achievements and technical excellence in women’s pitching at the professional level.
