Louis I of Valois, Duke of Orléans (1372–1407), was a prominent member of the French royal family and a central figure in the political conflicts that marked the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th. A son of Charles V and brother of King Charles VI, he held multiple ducal and comital titles, amassing substantial territorial power and court influence. He married Valentina Visconti of the powerful Milanese Visconti family, with whom he had many children, including Charles, Duke of Orléans, and John, Count of Angoulême, the ancestors of Louis XII and Francis I respectively. During the Hundred Years’ War, Louis played an active political role, contesting the regency and the guardianship of the royal princes with the Duke of Burgundy, John the Fearless. The rivalry between them split the nobility and fueled a prolonged internal crisis that erupted into political violence and the fragmentation of royal authority. In 1407, after a brief public reconciliation, Louis was assassinated in Paris—an event that precipitated the civil war between the factions known as the Armagnacs and the Burgundians. His murder had lasting repercussions, deepening the monarchy’s instability and shaping the succession of conflicts that would define French politics in the following decades.
