Duke in Bavaria Franz Joseph (1888–1912) was a member of the House of Wittelsbach and a recognized figure among Bavarian nobility in the early 20th century. The youngest son of Duke Karl Theodor and Infanta Maria José of Portugal, he served as a first lieutenant in the Kaiser’s Uhlan regiment and worked as a special instructor at the Royal Riding Academy in Munich, where his skill and victories in equestrian competitions brought him distinction.
In 1910 he traveled to the United States, where he attracted considerable attention from the press and high society and was hailed as one of the most talked-about nobles since Prince Henry of Prussia. He took part in social events in New York, attended performances, and displayed an informal manner the local press described as “democratic,” although he stated that marrying an American would cost him his ducal status.
He remained unmarried and, despite an engagement that was broken off in 1912, left recognized descendants through his relationship with Caroline “Lilly” Stockhammer, which founded the von Plottnitz-Stockhammer family, whose later members were active in politics and the arts. Franz Joseph died in 1912 of poliomyelitis at the age of 24, in a year marked by tragic losses in the Wittelsbach family.
