Christopher Arnold “Duke” Iversen was a professional American football player who played as a running back and defensive back in the 1940s and early 1950s. A graduate of the University of Oregon, he became known as a three-time letterman for the Ducks and took part in the East–West Shrine Game before being selected by the New York Giants in the 1947 draft. His career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Marine Corps and continued to play football for military teams. At the professional level, Iversen moved among New York leagues and franchises: he appeared in games for the New York Giants (NFL), the New York/Brooklyn Yankees (AAFC) and the New York Yanks (NFL), contributing on both offense and defense — with interceptions, returns and some rushes and receptions over five seasons. His playing time included appearances in the AAFC postseason and in the early phase of the leagues’ merger. After retiring from sports, he returned to Petaluma, sold the family farm and entered the real estate business. His career is notable for the transition from college to professional football during a period of reorganization of American leagues and for balancing military service with an athletic career.
